Musicians Lucy Dacus and Katie Gavin have united to recreate a magazine cover from the 90s, thrilling fellow lesbians everywhere.
Featured on the April cover of Alternative Press, Dacus and MUNA star Gavin took us back to 1993 with a recreation of k.d. lang and Cindy Crawford’s “risqué” issue of Vanity Fair.
The new magazine cover showed boygenius favourite Dacus as Lang, lounging in a barber’s chair, while wearing a suit and tie. Gavin is seen in a bodysuit and heeled boots, ready to give her a shave.
Supermodel Crawford has said it was one of her favourite cover shoots, writing on Instagram in 2023: “[Photographer Herb Ritts] called me the night before to see if I wanted to be part of this, which was considered a bit risqué at the time, challenging gender stereotypes.
“Still one of my favourite cover shoots, I’m so proud to have been part of it.”
Fans and celebrities alike went wild for the homage to the famous cover, with fellow lesbian musician Brandi Carlile writing: “Iconic, this remake is so fabulous.”
One fan responded: “Hey, so I’ve been impacted lesbianly,” while another wrote: “Crazy how this photo is 10 hours long.”
Someone else proclaimed: “Lesbians everywhere just fell to their knees.”
Dacus was praised last month for confirming her romantic relationship with bandmate Julien Baker, although fans clearly had an inkling that they were together, with one writing: “Fork found in kitchen.”
In an interview with The New Yorker magazine, Dacus said: “I want to protect what is precious in my life but also to be honest, and make art that’s true,” adding that Baker was the subject of many songs on her new album, Forever is a Feeling.
