Fans have praised Lorde for putting out her “best” song and accompanying music video to date with “Man of the Year”.
The New Zealand-born musician has shifted Lorde summer 2025 into gear (as coined by Charli XCX at Coachella) after dropping her massive hit “What Was That”, and perhaps her most personal track yet, “Man of the Year”.
Released on Thursday (29 May), the track marks the song she’s “proudest of” from her upcoming album Virgin, which drops next month, and appears to put her recent admission about her gender identity into music.
Fans have rallied around the singer for her honest portrayal of her experience with gender, with one fan writing on Instagram: “Best yet. You are at your peak. I am so grateful to watch you perform for the world, constantly raising the bar you set yourself.”
Another told the “Mood Ring” singer, “Thank you for this. Truly,” while another added, “Beyond stunning.”
“FATHER!”, another wrote, a play on words of the term of endearment and respect, “Mother”.
She sings in the first verse: “Like new from my recent ego death / Sirens sing overnight, violent, sweet music / You met me at a really strange time in my life / Take my knife and I cut the cord / My babe can’t believe I’ve become someone else / Someone more like myself.”
Lorde continues in the chorus: “Who’s gon’ love me like this? / Oh-oh, oh, who could give me lightness? / Way he flow down through me / Love me like this / Now I’m broken open / Let’s hear it for the man of the year.”
Meanwhile, the music video shows the star taking off her top and binding her chest, further depicting her current journey with her gender identity. It also harks back to her binder-like bandeau look at the Met Gala, which was designed by Thom Browne.
Whilst on the red carpet, Lorde said her outfit represents where she is in her life “gender-wise”. She recently told Rolling Stone that she feels “in the middle”, recalling that she told Chappell Roan, “I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.”
Lorde’s upcoming album Virgin is set to arrive on 27 June. Her song “Man of the Year” is out now.
