Labour’s Emily Thornberry gives best response to degrading question about women having penises

Labour MP Emily Thornberry has been praised for saying she “doesn’t care” about trans people’s genitals in an interview for LBC.

In an interview with Nick Ferrari on LBC, Thornberry said she doesn’t care if a woman has a penis, only that they are looked after by the government.

“Yes, some of them [women] will have penises. I’m not looking up their skirts, I don’t care,” she said in the video interview.

“What I care about is making sure they’re looked after properly and not used as a political football by a prime minister who ought to know better.”

Responding to the video, a Twitter user said: “We got there! An MP finally said the correct f**king answer to an absolutely ridiculous question that’s been bounced around for far too long.”

Emily Thornberry’s comments come as the conversation on trans rights in the UK has ramped up, with Boris Johnson announcing that trans people will not be covered by the ban on conversion therapy, also arguing that trans women should not be able to compete in women’s sports.

Defending the decision to exclude trans people from a conversion therapy ban on Wednesday (6 April), Johnson said: “We will have a ban on gay conversion therapy, which to me is utterly abhorrent.

“But there are complexities and sensitivities when you move from the area of sexuality to the question of gender. There, I’m afraid, there are things that I think still need to be worked out.”

He said he was “sorry we haven’t been able to reach agreement with the organisations concerned but that will in now way diminish our determination to tackle prejudice wherever we can”.

Amid the conversion therapy row, Tory MP Alicia Kearns issued an apology to trans people for leaving them out of the ban on the “abhorrent” practice.

“Since no one else seems to be saying it, I apologise to our transgender community,” she wrote in an op-ed for The Times.

“Excluding trans people from this ban not only devalues the misery and suffering already suffered by countless victims, but also devalues trans people as less worthy of protection.”
