Jason Isaacs says there was ‘just as much drama’ off-screen while filming The White Lotus

The White Lotus star Jason Isaacs has revealed that there was an ‘off-screen White Lotus‘ with ‘just as much drama’ while filming the third season of the iconic show.

In terms of plots, few are more outrageous than The White Lotus, season three. In just seven episodes, the Thailand-based instalment of the satire has showcased a snake attack on Aimee Lou Wood’s Chelsea while her boyfriend Rick (Walton Goggins) searches for his father’s killer, the bitchiest blonde trio you’ve ever met (Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon and Michelle Monaghan) and, oh yeah, some fraternal incest between Ratliff kids Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola)

That’s why the admission from Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs (the show’s unstable Ratliff patriarch Timothy) that there was “just as much drama” off-screen while filming the Mike White-created satire is particularly gagworthy.

Speaking to Vulture, Isaacs compared the experience of filming as “like a cross between summer camp and Lord of the Flies but in a gilded cage,” adding, “It wasn’t a holiday.”

He continued, “Some people got very close, there were friendships that were made and friendships that were lost. All the things you would imagine with a group of people unanchored from their home lives on the other side of the world, in the intense pressure cooker of the working environment with eye-melting heat and insects and late nights.”

“They say in the show, ‘What happens in Thailand stays in Thailand,’ but there’s an off-screen White Lotus as well, with fewer deaths but just as much drama,” he added.

When pressed for specifics, Isaacs replied, “I became very close to some people and less close to others, but we still all had that experience together and there’s a certain level of discretion required.”

The main plotline for Isaacs’s character has been Timothy becoming caught out for his involvement in a financial crime of some sort at home, resulting in suicidal ideations for the Ratliff figurehead.

The White Lotus season three also features Parker Posey as Ratliff’s on-screen wife Victoria, returning character Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) and Blackpink’s Lisa Manobal.

The White Lotus finale airs on HBO on Sunday 6 April in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW on Monday 7 April in the UK.
