Here’s what we know about Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has finally been revealed after over a decade of waiting, and fans couldn’t be happier.

The second iteration to the iconic life-simulation series was announced in a reveal trailer as part of Nintendo’s “Direct” live-stream on Thursday (27 March).

After over a decade of waiting for a sequel to the memorably wacky 2014 Nintendo DS title, fans were graced with a fittingly strange minute-long trailer showcasing multiple Miis – Nintendo’s avatars, which serve as the game’s main characters – up to various shenanigans.

While details are scarce right now, he’s where we know about the upcoming Tomodachi Life title.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream releases to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026

The hype-building trailer revealed few overt details about the game and, similarly, little information about its release date, simply promising that it would hit store shelves in 2026.

It looks as though the title will be releasing at some point after the company’s latest handheld console, the Nintendo Switch 2, which will be available at some point in 2025.

This has left some to theorise that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream could release earlier in 2026 rather than later to help pad out the console’s list of exclusive titles, though this isn’t confirmed.

Same-sex marriage is on the cards

The trailer finishes with an aptly odd sequence in which a female Mii has a bizarre dream about another female Mii, who she imagines as a giant towering over her.

While certainly fitting to Tomodachi Life and its weird and wonderful antics, eagle-eyed viewers have theorised that the segment could be hinting that same-sex romances will be available in the game.

This has yet to be confirmed, though it would make sense given Nintendo promised to include the feature in future instalments after facing backlash for leaving it absent in the first game.

In a statement at the time, it said that while it wasn’t possible to add the feature post-launch, future titles would “design a gameplay experience from the ground up that is more inclusive.”

The iconic Tomodachi Life speech synthesis is coming back

It looks like Nintendo isn’t skimping when it comes to Tomodachi Life’s defining style and weirdness, with its iconic speech synthesis voices making a return in the 2026 title.

The voices, known colloquially as “text-to-speech” voices, became a staple in Tomodachi Life memes and clips on the internet, which of course makes it impossible to make a sequel without it.

We’re hoping this could spell the return of the Concert Hall minigame, which allows players to make synthesised musical numbers with custom lyrics.

Tomodachi Life could be cross-generational

Given the game’s release date is somewhere post-launch for the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s likely that we could see cross-generational versions of the game, although this isn’t fully confirmed.

Nintendo confirmed in 2024 that its latest console would be backwards-compatible with first-generation Nintendo Switch titles, meaning cross-compatibility is on the company’s radar.

Additionally, similar steps were taken with games like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was launched on both the original Nintendo Switch and the Wii U, though with significant graphical and performance differences.
