Heartstopper producer offers update on potential season four: ‘Lots of moving parts’

Netflix’s Heartstopper continued to wow fans with its third, critically acclaimed season – but months later, the queer coming-of-age series has yet to be officially renewed.

Starring Kit Connor and Joe Locke as Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, and based on the webcomic and then graphic novels by Alice Oseman, Heartstopper has been one of the most pivotal queer shows in recent memory.

Season three tackled more serious subjects than ever before, and even starred Wicked heartthrob Jonathan Bailey and Marvel icon Hayley Atwell.

But despite the most recent instalment, which is based on volumes four and five of Oseman’s novels, being warmly received by an instant clamouring for a renewal, season four of Heartstopper has yet to be greenlit at Netflix. It would be based on an as-yet-unfinished sixth and final volume.

Executive producer for the series Patrick Walters has given a tantalising update for fans during a recent appearance at Series Mania in Lille, France, as reported by Deadline.

“The challenge is what you need to do in this moment is to pitch something that feels specific, and there is precedent for it, and it is moving the conversation on,” he explained.

“But that [is the] risk. Often, I find you want to gravitate towards risky material, and it needs that passion – but that’s a challenge.”

Walters did say that the team is, “working hard on it,” but added that “there are lots of moving parts.”

The update comes after Oseman gave a similar statement to fans at the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival in Lincoln last month.

“It’s still ongoing. We don’t have a final answer yet, but there are so many people behind the scenes who are working really hard to make it happen. We’re feeling optimistic, we’re feeling hopeful,” she said.

Connor has previously said he himself doesn’t know if season four of Heartstopper will happen.

The show also stars Yasmin Finney, William Gao, Sebastian Croft and Jenny Walser, and seasons one and two starred Olivia Colman as Nick’s mother.
