Greatest Eurovision song of the 21st century song named by fans – and it’s not one by Loreen

Ahead of Eurovision 2025, fans of the song contest have chosen their favourite Eurovision track of the 21st century. It’s bad luck for Loreen’s “Euphoria”.

Tens of thousands of BBC Radio 2 listeners voted for their favourite Eurovision tracks of the past 25 years, with Sam Ryder’s “Spaceman” being crowned the very best.

Sam Ryder came in second place at the 2022 contest in Turin, Italy, narrowly being beaten by Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra and their song “Stefania”. Kalush Orchestra’s track came in at number 29 on the BBC’s list.

Due to the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine, the country couldn’t host the 2023 contest, and the responsibility fell to the UK due to Ryder’s second place position.

Loreen’s song “Euphoria”, which won Eurovision in 2012, came in second place in the BBC Radio 2 poll.

“Rise Like A Phoenix” by drag icon Conchita Wurst, which won the contest in 2014, came in third, while Norway’s winning 2009 entrant “Fairytale” by Alexander Rybak came in fourth.

Käärijä’s 2023 bop “Cha Cha Cha” came in fifth place. The song missed out on the win at the 2023 contest after being beaten by Loreen’s second entry, “Tattoo”.

“Tattoo” found itself in eighth place on the listeners’ poll.

“The Code” and “Doomsday Blue”, which were entries from non-binary artists Nemo and Bambie Thug last year – with Nemo winning the contest – were on the list at number 15 and 26 respectively.

Other huge Eurovision hits on the top 40 list include Netta’s “Toy”, Måneskin’s “Zitte E Buoni” and Eleni Foureira’s “Feugo”.

The BBC Radio 2 poll gave listeners the opportunity to cast five votes from a list of 67 songs, which included every winner since the year 2000 and some other notable entrants selected by a panel of Eurovision experts.

The full top 40 list is available to see now, and will be played in a special BBC show entitled “Your Ultimate Eurovision Song”, hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race judge, Michelle Visage.

“Your Ultimate Eurovision Song” is available to stream on BBC Sounds now and will air on BBC Radio 2 on Saturday 17 May.

The Eurovision 2025 semi-finals take place on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 May, with the finale taking place in Basil, Switzerland, on Saturday 17 May.
