Fans wish Elton John a full recovery as he postpones farewell tour due to painful injury

Elton John has said he recently suffered an injury in a fall and will postpone the British and European dates for his final tour.

In a statement shared to the iconic singer’s Twitter on Thursday morning (16 September), John said he is with “great sadness” pushing the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour back by two years.

The final tour of the musician’s decades-long, trailblazing career kicked off in 2018 and has more than 300 shows across the globe billed.

The 74-year-old hitmaker broke the news to fans by saying that he “fell awkwardly on a hard surface” while holidaying across Europe and will now undergo an operation to mend his hip.

He had spent the summer with his husband David Furnish and two sons Elijah and Zachary when he suffered the injury and has spiralled into further pain since.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am forced to reschedule the 2021 dates of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023,” Elton John said, with the tour booked to recommend in New Orleans, January 2022.

“At the end of my summer break, I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since,” he continued.

“Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increased difficulties moving.

“I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make there are no long-term complications.”

Elton John added that he is to undergo a program of physiotherapy to “ensure a full recovery” and get back on his feet and perform the final leg of his tour.

The “Rocket Man” singer also said that he will perform as part of the Global Citizen Live fundraiser on 25 September “as I don’t want to let the charity down”.

Global Citizen Live will see the likes of BTS and Lizzo perform in the day-long concert stretched across six continents to beat poverty.

Fans were quick to wish John a “speedy recovery” on social media while others expressed their “heartbreak” at the long-awaited tour being delayed.
