Everything we know about Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey so far – including Elliot Page’s role

Famed British director Christopher Nolan has been working on a new film, after the success of the Cillian Murphy-led Oppenheimer, based on Homer’s The Odyssey – and it’s already shaping up to be a blockbuster.

The Odyssey, a Greek epic poem written in the 8th or 7th century BC considered one of the greatest works in literature, sees the return of our hero Odysseus from Troy to “reclaim his threatened home on Ithaca”.

He is also aiming to reunite with his wife Penelope but before he can, he will have to encounter a whole manner of creatures and monsters along the way – including a Cyclops, sirens, and the witch Circe.

The film version has been written, produced, and directed by Nolan entirely – along with his wife Emma Thomas – and some of the biggest names in the industry are set to star in it.

Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and Robert Pattinson have signed on to the film.

Matt Damon will be playing Odysseus and is a Nolan veteran, having previously starred in Nolan’s Oppenheimer, while Pattinson also has experience working with the director in Tenet.

Elliot Page previously played Ariadne in Inception, another Nolan film, who is named after a character in The Odyssey, however in the time since Inception was released, Page has come out as a transgender man so it seems likely he be playing a different role.

Male characters in the Odyssey aren’t exactly few and far between, so there are a whole host of roles that Elliot Page could potentially take on. There’s Odysseus’ son Telemachus, for example, or potentially Eurylochus who appears in Homer’s Odyssey as second-in-command of Odysseus’ ship.

Hermes, the messenger of the gods also makes an appearance in the Odyssey, so perhaps Elliot Page will take on a more mystical role. We’ll have to wait and see, as Christopher Nolan has been tight-lipped about his casting choices so far.

Universal has given the film a budget of £250 million and the film will be “shot across the world”. Filming has taken place already in Morocco, Greece, and Italy and is expected to also take place in the UK.

The Odyssey is currently slated for a theatrical release in July 2026.
