Internet icon and trans trailblazer Dylan Mulvaney has revealed that she auditioned for two separate roles on Ryan Murphy’s Glee – and we’re gagged.
It’s been over ten years since the wildly out-of-pocket Fox musical-comedy-drama Glee finished airing — and we’re still somehow learning new things about the series that make us go, “Huh?”
Alongside dramatic character changes (like Matthew Morrison’s Will Schuester originally being a meth addict – yes, really), it turns out that a few now-famous faces also auditioned for the show, including trans TikTok star, author and singer Dylan Mulvaney.
Speaking on the latest episode of podcast That’s What You Really Missed (hosted by former cast members Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who portrayed Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang, respectively), Mulvaney revealed that she was in the running for two parts.
“I have to tell you, I auditioned for young Kurt back in the day,” Mulvaney told the pair, referencing a flashback version of Chris Colfer’s iconic character that she would have auditioned for pre-transition – but that’s not the gag.
“And, are you ready? Guess what other character I auditioned for,” she said, clarifying that the role was not, like ‘young Kurt’, a flashback character.
“It was Jake Puckerman. I’m going to let that sit,” she revealed, sending McHale and Ushkowitz into hysterics – largely because Puckerman, eventually portrayed by Jacob Artist, was a fairly ‘macho’ character – and Mulvaney is a trans woman, who publicly documented their transition on TikTok.
“I might be the only one that auditioned for both young Kurt and Jake, but what I definitely confirm is I’m the only trans woman that auditioned for both young Kurt and Jake.”
Explaining the audition, recent PAPER Magazine firecracker Mulvaney joked, “When the Jake audition [came] around, it was very obvious that the casting directors were not like, ‘Remember that kid who we saw for young Kurt? We gotta get that one in here!’
“I remember his whole thing was like he had to play guitar, and liked sports, and I just remember being asked if I played guitar and being like, ‘No.’ And them saying, ‘Any sports background, and me going, ‘Not really.’”
Glee mercifully ended in 2015 – but Ryan Murphy has threatened a reboot of the show more than once since then.
