Drag Race UK icon Tayce spills tea on ‘scary’ new TV gig and possible major ‘comeback’

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK icon Tayce has signed up for a new, spooky-ooky-kooky TV gig, and teased “coming back” to one of the shows that made her name.

In brand new OUTflix TV series Drag in the Dark, Tayce will be putting the “ghoul” in the gall and the gumption as she heads to a haunted castle in the middle of the night to seek out paranormal activity.

Tayce is joined by the London-based South East Paranormal Team as she arms herself with ghost-hunting gadgets and tests out ouija boards in an attempt to communicate with long lost spirits.

Each episode features a different UK drag star, including Drag Race UK favourites Divina De Campo and Banksie.

“I think the ghost should have been scared of me,” Tayce tells PinkNews of her terrifying encounter with the undead.

Despite always being fascinated by the paranormal, the 30-year-old performer had never experienced any ghostly happenings in her own life, and so was ready “legs akimbo” to welcome the ghouls in.

“I went into it so happy and ready. I don’t know if that was maybe the right head frame or wrong head frame but I thought, if I go into this with my third eye on, mind open and just leave everything to chance, anything can happen,” she explains.

She arrived at the castle at around 5pm in the evening for filming, and stayed there – in full drag – until 2am the following morning. During the process, she had to try and coax out some restless spirits through mirror work and frequency tests.

“We did a scene where we were looking into a mirror and you can see things in the mirror, like, I guess, like a reflection [looking] back at you. I do remember there being times of seeing things in the mirror. It wasn’t like a sudden apparent ‘Oooh!’ change but it was a bit unnerving [to] see things going on in the reflection that weren’t there,” she explains.

In one scene, she’s sat in a chair as the paranormal team try to summon spirits, before her back goes ice cold.

“Oh my God, so some of the rooms the atmosphere would just get really thick. It’s not even so much of a visual thing. It’s more emotional, mental. You can feel a presence. You can feel when something gets a bit heavier,” she recalls.

“And definitely with temperature as well. There were times when the temperature would dip, where it would get regular again, and that, for me, was kind of the sign.”

Towards the end of the episode, Tayce is sent into a room on her own, which she describes as the “scariest” bit about the experience.

While solo in the room, she describes hearing a “whimpering” sound coming from the corner.

“We had these white noise headphones on and I had to sit in the room, pitch black, on my own, not a soul in there apart from the souls. That was the most scary [bit], definitely. Even if I wanted to get up and run, I honestly would have no idea where I’m going. I’d probably run into a wall or something, crack my nose. That was definitely the most harrowing experience.”

Despite coming into contact with something supernatural, Tayce says that she would go ghost-hunting again “every week” if she could.

Yet it’s unlikely that the drag superstar will have the chance anytime soon, as she’s booked and busy with a secret “comeback” to an unnamed TV show.

“There’s some things I’m working on right now that I might be coming back for,” she teases.

Though she can’t name names, fans of the Welsh wonderwoman will likely be hoping for a Drag Race All Stars return, after she made it all the way to the runner-up position on Drag Race UK season two in 2021.

However, she could also be referring to a Strictly Come Dancing comeback. In December, Tayce made history as the first drag competitor in the BBC show’s history, appearing on – and winning – the one episode Christmas special.

Fans will be gagging and gasping to see her make a comeback for a full-length season when the dance competition returns to screens this autumn.

“I’ve always been a big believer of cherry-picking, and what’s right is right when it’s right, and not just to go for something just because you think ‘It’s my last time I’m ever going to be on anything,’” she shares.

“So I’m fortunate and blessed to be still working, very busy. There’s some things that I might be coming back for this year. Fingers crossed, you know?”
