Doctor Who actress Nicola Coughlan has slammed HBO’s Harry Potter series saying she “wouldn’t touch it with a 10ft pole”.
The Bridgerton actress, who helped raise more than £60,000 for trans charity Not A Phase in the wake of the UK’s Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of a woman, has become the latest star to slam the series.
Coughlan took to her Instagram Story to hit out at the series, on which JK Rowing will serve as an executive producer. Last week, Rowling celebrated the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that the legal definition of a woman excludes transgender women, and confirmed that she donated money to the gender-critical group that brought the case forward.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the actress took to Instagram to share an article headline that read: “This is a new low for JK Rowling”.
Coughlan then took aim at HBO’s Harry Potter series, writing: “Keep your new Harry Potter lads. Wouldn’t touch it with a 10ft pole”.
She had previously made her opinion on the ruling known, and in a video, she said: “To see an already marginalised community being further attacked and attacked in law is really stomach churning and disgusting, and to see people celebrate it is more stomach-churning and disgusting,”

HBO announced on 14 April that the 53-year-old British actor, known for Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, will star as half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in its TV adaptation of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels.
Amid backlash to the TV adaptation at the end of last year, HBO defended JK Rowling, stating that she has the right to express her views on trans people.
