A museum that highlights the “science, humour and philosophy” of crabs has issued a condemnation of the UK Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of a woman.
The Crab Museum in Margate, Kent, shared its solidarity with the trans community after the UK’s top court last week ruled on the definition of sex in the 2010 Equality Act. The judges decided unanimously that the words “woman” and “sex” referred to “a biological woman and biological sex,” essentially declaring that transgender women are not women.
The ruling prompted protests in major cities, including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol.
Now, a spokesperson for the museum has denounced the judges’ decision to “exclude a group of persecuted people from equality legislation”, adding: “Their ruling centred on the word ‘biology’, with the judge stating that biological sex is ‘assumed to be self-explanatory and to require no further explanation’. Speaking in a professional capacity as a museum of biology: this is not how biology works.

“Biology, like all sciences, should never be taken for granted or assumed to be self-explanatory. Even worse, it should never be used to justify weaponised culture-war issues. This ruling is an abuse of science.”
Much like gender identity, biological sex is a “spectrum” that can vary greatly between individuals and there are “no binaries in nature”, the spokesperson added.
The statement, which has been welcomed by allies of the community and the museum, warned that trans people “must be defended at all costs,” because if their rights are mitigated, “other minorities won’t be far behind” and “maybe you’ll be next”.
The museum, which is open on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays, aims to educate people on biology, climate change and evolutionary history.
