Charlize Theron has criticised celebrities, including Oprah and Kim Kardashian, for attending the lavish wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The three-day wedding extravaganza between billionaire Bezos and former journalist Lauren Sánchez drew a host of Hollywood A-listers to the Italian city of Venice, but not all celebrities were impressed by the couple.
Oscar-winner actor Theron, a staunch LGBTQ+ supporter, voiced her thoughts while hosting the fifth annual block party for her Africa Outreach Project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she told the crowd: “We might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that’s OK because they suck, and we’re cool.”
Theron went on to criticise the Trump administration, declaring “Ee’re moving backwards fast. Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women’s rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise.
“This isn’t just policy, it’s personal.”
Theron isn’t the only star to criticise Bezos’ nuptials: lesbian comic Rosie O’Donnell also hit out at the event, taking to Instagram to say: “The Bezos wedding turned my stomach, seeing all these billionaires gathering in the gross excess of it all, the show of it. Is Oprah friends with Jeff [Bezos]. Really, how is that possible?”
She went on to describe the new Mrs Bezos as a “fake fem bot”.
Amazon was among the first organisations to remove LGBTQ+ rights support and “equity for Black people” from its website in the face of the Trump administration’s drive to erase diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
