Benito Skinner shares hope for ‘insane and unhinged’ Overcompensating season two

Benito Skinner’s queer college comedy Overcompensating has been out in the world for a mere few days, but fans are already demanding season two.

Since its release on Prime Video on 15 May, Overcompensating has proven a hit with critics and audiences alike, achieving an impressive 93 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being dubbed by some as 2025’s “show of the year”.

Now, the show’s creator and lead star, comedian Benito Skinner (AKA Benny Drama), has fueled further demand for season two by revealing that he has a follow-up all mapped out.

Overcompensating follows Skinner as a semi-autobiographical character named Benny, a closeted gay college student who stumbles his way through first year while navigating exploring his sexuality and impressing the school’s jock-in-chief, Peter (Adam DiMarco).

Along the way, he finds and loses friendship, falls in love with a British heartthrob, and deals with a torn relationship with his tetchy sister, Grace (Mary Beth Barone).

No spoilers here, but season one ends on a Mount Everest-sized cliffhanger, leaving the door very wide open for Overcompensating season two.

Skinner recently told Variety that he is “ready to go” with a second season.

“I think I know what I want to do and there’s so much more we wanna say. There will be backslide, and that’s what that finale is. This journey of becoming yourself and overcompensating, it’s a rollercoaster and at times I think college can be so selfish and you can be like, it’s every man for himself,” he shared.

“It’s drugs and alcohol and feelings and we didn’t want to stray from that, and we want to continue it.”

Barone, who has become a breakout fan favourite from the show, explained that she wanted to do a season two to see Benny and Grace “finally be honest with each other about who they are and how they make each other feel”.

Yet it’s DiMarco who has amped up excitement for season two the most, describing Skinner’s plan for the second outing as “unhinged” and “insane”.

“I know what Benny has planned for season two if we get one, and it’s insane, it’s so good. I wish I could tell you,” he teased.

“I don’t really know what to say other than it’s just more unhinged and more insane than this season.”

While Benito Skinner steers the ship in the lead role in Overcompensating, the show is buoyed by a rolodex of blue-chip guest stars, including Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and his partner in comedy crime Matt Rogers, Megan Fox, Lukas Gage, Connie Britton, and Kyle MacLachlan.

Charli XCX appears in Benito Skinner’s new queer comedy Overcompensating (Prime Video).

Charli XCX also stars in an episode as a diva-fied version of herself. The season was filmed in autumn 2024, at the peak of Charli’s Brat success.

Speaking to PinkNews recently, Skinner reflected on the chance to work with his “friend” during the height of her commercial success.

“I think this summer was this like unbelievable moment where I got to shoot this show that has been my dream and my entire life for six years, and meanwhile one of my best friends is finally getting the flowers that she has deserved for 10 plus years,” Skinner said.

“I think it actually just gave us all even more energy, at least me. I don’t know how she does it, and the fact that she still came to work, killed it acting in the show, performed her songs, and helped make the music of this show what it is.”

Overcompensating is streaming now on Prime Video.
