Bella Ramsey hints at what The Last of Us season 2 twist means for Ellie in season 3

The Last of Us season three might look a little different after the major twist at the end of season two, and Bella Ramsey has some thoughts on just how different.

Warning: Spoilers for The Last of Us season two, episode seven ahead.

The Last of Us is no stranger to heart-pounding, nail-biting scenes, but the end of season two arguably delivered the HBO show’s most intense moment yet.

In episode seven, the season’s finale, survivalist Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) takes her search for Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) to unimaginable new levels.

On day three in Seattle, she steals a dinghy and sails across Seattle harbour to the city’s aquarium during the midst of a powerful thunderstorm, believing that Abby – the woman who brutally murdered her surrogate father Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) – is hiding out there.

Her journey comes with two near-death experiences, after she’s turfed out of the boat by a gargantuan wave, before ending up washed ashore in the territory of the Scars, who string her up for hanging and disembowelment. She’s saved less by the bell, and more by the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) who launch an attack on the Scars’ village.

Eventually at the aquarium, Ellie encounters Abby’s cronies Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer), where she holds them at gunpoint until they share intel on Abby’s whereabouts. To cut a long, bloody story short, both Owen and Mel – who is pregnant – end up dead.

After Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Dina’s ex, Jesse (Young Mazino) bring Ellie back to the theatre where Dina (Isabela Merced) is recovering, the group is interrupted by a bang. After rushing to see what’s happened, Jesse is instantly shot in the head, by none other than Abby.

Abby accuses Jesse and Tommy of killing Owen and Mel, before Ellie confesses to being the culprit. In a jaw-dropping final moment between the pair (for now), Abby raises her gun to Ellie, and shoots.

The screen immediately goes black, before lighting back up to reveal Abby laying on a sofa, before being awoken by her WLF counterparts. “Seattle: Day One”, flashes on screen, alerting viewers that it’s now time to see how Abby’s time in the city plays out. That, though, will be saved for The Last of Us season three.

Will Ellie be in The Last of Us season three?

Players of the original Naughty Dog games will understand that the HBO series seems to be following the direction of the games, whereby players switch from playing as Ellie to playing as Abby.

Therefore, it seems as though season three will focus very much on Abby’s antics from her own viewpoint, and Ellie won’t be as present in the show.

Speaking to Variety ahead of the season two finale, lead Bella Ramsey appeared to confirm as much, explaining that they will “most likely” have a smaller role in season three.

“I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect [to have a smaller part],” the 21-year-old actor said.

“I think that I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”

Expanding on what might happen to Ellie, Dina and co. in season three, The Last of Us’  creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann suggested that they may not be on screen at all.

“Even if I thought I knew now exactly how it was going to go, I’m experienced enough to know that two weeks from now we may have a different idea of how it should go,” Mazin explained at a press conference on Friday (23 May).

“All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story.”

“Whether you will see them on screen or not [in season three], their presence will be there throughout,” Druckman added.

The Last of Us season two is streaming on HBO and NOW.
